5 reasons your workplace internet isn’t that fast

Have you ever been so frustrated and wondered why your workplace internet is not fast?

Let’s call a spade what it is: Slow internet shouldn’t be a conversation in big 2022, and we might just be returning to the dark ages if these problems still exist.

You would agree that a slow internet connection in the office while you’re trying to work cracks at the nerves. Waiting unusually long for files to download, videos to load, and having meetings where sound and visuals buffer will contribute to a loss of morale and a decline in productivity among teams. And even more, frustration will come when something as simple as an email wouldn’t send.

To make matters worse, slow internet does not only affect your employees but also does a number on your customer service which anyone would agree is bad for business.

You’re using old equipment

Whether you are paying for the best/fastest kind of internet connectivity, if you are using equipment that has passed its glory days such as an old computer or an old router,  your workplace internet will remain slow down. 

You should modernize your equipment as regularly as is necessary. This will help to avoid issues with fast internet connection among a host of other problems related to old equipment.

Your router probably needs to be relocated

Placing your router in the poorest of locations like under an abandoned desk far away from everyone can be bad. Similarly, positioning it too far away from your office devices is another reason for slow internet connection in your organization. 

Place your router in strategic locations–not too far up, or too far down.

Too many people are connected to one network source

In your workplace, one of your employees could have up to 3 devices connected to the network source. For instance, an employee might connect their PC, their mobile phone, and perhaps a tablet, etc. When you do the math, you will find out that more than one person connecting to the network with at least 3 devices would definitely cause a bottleneck in your internet. 

To fix this, limit the amount of bandwidth that non-company devices use so that the majority of the company’s internet is used by your own devices. 

You’re not filtering the content your bandwidth is used for

Using your organization’s internet connection on streaming or gaming sites/apps excessively is another factor that contributes to slowing down the internet connectivity. And, yes, employees are human beings, and human beings are known to take a yard when given a mile. 

So in order to solve this, you might need to be strict. Ensure your employees are using the bandwidth mostly, if not only, for work-related tasks. Otherwise, limiting the amount of bandwidth used on recreational sites works too. 

Maybe you need to upgrade your bandwidth

The world is constantly evolving, especially technology-wise. Employees are on the interweb more often than they used to be; and the bandwidth in your office may not be large enough to accommodate your employees’ presence online. If your business/office is still running on an outdated bandwidth, that might be the reason your workplace internet isn’t that fast.
